Camping at Summersville Lake’s Battle Run Campground is the state’s premier camping resort.Breath taking views from most of the sites.While you are there you can enjoy boating,swimming,relaxing on the beach and a quit laid back atmosphere. Bicycles can be ridden on a host of trails,that follow the south side dam(take a camera).You can also ride inside the camping area.Make sure all children under the age of 15 wear a helmet.

If you bring a boat.There is a ramp just below the camping area.Launching your boat at Summersville lake will cost you $3.00 for a one day permit.A collection box is located at each ramp.Fill out the info form with the 3 dollars,use the envelopes provided.Then slip it in the collection box.There are two parts.One you keep in your .Two-leave in the windshield of your truck.You may also purchase a year permit.If you visit quite often. If you are staying at the campground (a registered camper)this dose not apply to you. It is included with your campground pass.

Note:It is very important.The receipt you keep to leave in your truck “MUST BE IN PLAN SITE.PUT IT ON THE DASH.IT WILL BE CHECKED”.

Summersville Lake Battle Run Campground

This is a class A  campground with one hundred and seventeen camp sites and one hundred thirteen have electric.The other 7 are for tent camping only.If you are camping with a tent.You will have to carry all your gear about 100 yard-up hill to reach the marked sites.You can see the lake, but watch out for snakes.All tent sites are in the woods.

Before Memorial Day Weekend and after Labor Day the campground is operated on a “first come first serve” basis

Mountain Lake Campground,

Privately operated facility, is located at the north end of the lake.Most of the camp sites are located in the woods.The lake is only a short walk.A boat ramp is not available.

Summersville Lake is conveniently located close to US 19. From US 19 take Route 129 W to the dam, office and lake.

Facts about Summersville Lake and Dam

  • The Summersville Lake Project was built under the supervision of the Army Corps of Engineers between 1960 and 1966 at a cost of nearly 48 million dollars
  • By the end of 1974 it had paid for itself by prevented flood damages in the Gauley and Kanawha River areas Taken from boat launch below campground. estimated at almost 67 million dollars
  • The dam is on Gauley River near the town of Summersville in Nicholas County, WV, and controls a drainage area of 803 square miles
  • Summersville is the second largest rock-fill dam in the eastern United States and is made up of 12 million cubic yards of earth and rock.
  • The dam is 390 feet high (about as tall as a 40-story building) and 2,280 feet long
  • During summer, the lake is raised to elevation 1,652 feet above sea level which provides 2,790 surface acres of water for recreation
  • During late fall and winter it is lowered to elevation 1,575 to provide maximum space for storage of floodwaters
  • Water is released from the lake through 1,555-foot long long, 29-foot diameter tunnel controlled at the lower end by three 9-foot diameter valves
  • 55 million dollar hydroelectric power plant completed in 2001
